She grows!

I wish I could say the first picture was foresight, but it was accidental, really — that I put her in front of something that could then be used later to show how much she’d changed and grown. If you click to see the picture larger, it’s much easier to read and understand. It’s amazing to me how different she looks and how much taller she is compared to the beginning of this school year, and even more so since the first picture was taken. I’m so proud of my girl!

The last picture was taken today, which isn’t truly the last day – tomorrow is. I couldn’t take it tomorrow because I’ll be at work at the end of her minimum day, but I figured she’s probably not going to change too much from today to tomorrow :)

ETA: I just realized she has Crocs on in every picture. Someone (me) has a Crocs addiction… yikes! But seriously, how many kids’ shoes can you put through the dishwasher?

Playdate Anticipation

All week, my kids knew they got to see their friends this weekend for a playdate – these friends recently moved to the Bay Area, so we unfortunately don’t get to see them as often as we’d like to. Avery decided to draw a picture of all four of the kids together, and her drawings have gotten so good, I wanted to take some quick snapshots as she finished her drawing. Afterward, we took a picture in the same order as the drawing, just for fun :) I love how she drew the circus in her picture after finishing the kids — with these four running around and screaming all day it definitely felt like the circus!

Craft Saturday

The girls and I spent a couple of hours making fun crafts on Saturday morning. It was a welcomed diversion from all of the stressful things going on lately. First we tried making tissue paper flowers, and we all failed miserably. My tissue paper was gift-grade, not craft-grade. It ripped easily and clearly wasn’t made to withstand the yanking and folding we were doing to it! So then I thought it might work for paper lanterns, and we tackled that idea easily. I used to make them with students years ago, but haven’t done it in a while. The girls were amazed that I could just whip up a paper lantern in only a couple of minutes ;) I never told them I’d probably helped make hundreds of them with students over the years…

Sadly, I left them hanging in the tree overnight and it rained last night, and one of them took a little bit of a hit with the water damage… we stapled it back together and Ainsley didn’t seem too upset, so now they’re inside hanging from the ceiling :)

First Production :)

Avery was in her first play on stage last night. It was so fun! She had a great time, even though she told me she had “shaky legs” when she had to say her part. She’s had such an awesome experience at school so far — I’m so thankful :) The play was called “Arf!” and was about a big group of dogs competing against each other to see which one was most talented. It ended with the only mutt of the group belting out dog-related Shakespearean lines – he was chosen, of course as “best in show.” Such a cute story… I did catch it on my Flip, too — but the lighting threw everything off and the center stage is too bright to make anything out. Trying to figure out if it’s salvageable… Avery looks so tiny in these pictures — mostly because the majority of the girls who played the Dalmatian parts were in second grade and are more than a year older than her :)

This felt sort of like the grand finale to her first grade year. She’s VERY excited to be a second-grader after 4 more days of school!

From March – last day in Death Valley

I’ve processed 175 pictures… this is going to be one helluva photobook. I can’t wait to see the finished product :)

Day One | Day Two, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 | Day Three | Day Four

Yes, I scanned my kid’s first report.

Avery got to do an animal report for school for extra credit. It’s amazing to me how interested in “extra credit” she already is… she’s 6 1/2! She chose a praying mantis as her creature to write about, and was very excited, because she knew I had a picture of her holding a praying mantis, and some other mantis pictures I’ve snapped over the years. She started the report over a month ago, and whattyaknow, we actually saw a praying mantis in the yard a couple of weekends ago and were able to photograph him :) She was thrilled that we actually saw one after she’d started her report!

So, just to preserve it and make sure I have a ‘copy’ somewhere, I decided to scan the whole thing and share it on my blog :)

Picture from a couple of weeks ago that she’s including :)

And the picture that she remembered from September of 2009!

On Friday she gets to get up in front of the class and present her report. I so wish I could be there to see that :) She claims she’s not nervous — but I’m nervous for her!

Death Valley Trip, 2011 – Day Three!

It’s been a while since I’ve worked on my 600+ pictures of Death Valley. I had such a great time, I can’t wait to do it again next Spring Break! It was just so amazing! Here are some more photos to share.

First, we started off by going to Scotty’s Castle. It’s a weird little place with an even weirder history. Pretty cool for being in the middle of nowhere, though!

After Scotty’s Castle, we hit the Stovepipe Wells Sand Dunes. It was GORGEOUS, but definintely tough to photograph in the middle of the day. Next time, I plan to visit some of the spots nearer to sunset to capture the contours of the landscape better. Live and learn…

The dunes were windy, so we then headed to Monarch Canyon, and took the Beatty Cutoff to Rhyolite. Such a beautiful drive!!! We gassed up over the Nevada border, visited the Rhyolite Ghost Town, and then took Titus Canyon back to camp. It was a long, fun day :)

Avery had written her name on the Jeep window at some point… I thought it was kind of funny to capture it while it was so visible in the sun :)

Awesome Actions!

I don’t usually run actions on my pictures, just some tweaks I use often that don’t really follow any sort of sequence. My very talented friend Kristin of Kristin Rachelle Photography has just launched some awesome actions, however, so I gave them all a “go” on this picture of Avery. I think they’re pretty darn great! They’re available here for anyone who’s interested!

Here is the original photo of Avery, and then each of the actions run on that original. What fun plays they turned out to be :)

Thanks Kristin, they’re so lovely and easy to run and fiddle with!

Grammy’s Birthday

Yesterday was my mom’s birthday :) We celebrated at PF Chang’s, one of her favorites. The girls actually ate Chinese food and didn’t complain much about how “weird” and “gross” it was! Happy birthday, Grammy Gigi!

Spring Planting Saturday

We replanted all of our pots in the front and back yards on Saturday afternoon. It was a nice day to do it — not too hot, sunny, and clear :) The girls wanted to take over the whole procedure and had the best time digging in the dirt. I love doing these little projects with them! They are unbelieveably cooperative sometimes… I try not to question it too much! There are several more pots that I didn’t bother to take pictures of. It was just the same thing over and over… afterward we played croquet :) I’m working on some dorky pictures of that, too!
